THE SOCIETY OF HWARANG

THE SOCIETY's affiliation with the soft Korean arts is an accident of history due to the personal narrative of its founder, Bob Duggan, who became a devotee of Hapkido/Hwa Rang Do in 1968, and in 1980 founded  ESI. It was in the year of '68 that he and his close friend, Vicente Montenegro were initiated into the arts as the first students of Grand Master Joo Sang Lee, and in 1972 came under the personal tutelage of his younger brother, Grand Master Joo Bang Lee, founder of the World Hwa Rang Do Association.   

THE SOCIETY OF THE HWARANG is open to martial artists of every discipline. THE SOCIETY's membership is international, non-sectarian, non-exclusive, and organized on democratic principles.  It is devoted to seeking knowledge in the fighting arts, to critique our most cherished assumptions with the goal of establishing rigorous standards of excellence, and apply these concepts to professional careers in the field of protection, security, law enforcement and military careers. 

THE SOCIETY's mission will include sponsoring martial arts seminars for security professionals and martial art enthusiast.  We will examine the historic roots, training regimen and professional calling and craft of the martial arts. We will critically examine technique and methods of training, their origin and application to the real world outside the Dojang. We will take a special interest in the use of the these arts in such professions as Executive Protection or Bodyguards, Security Specialist, law enforcement and the Special Force units in the military.
