On Saturday October 12th, 2024, Hwarang Youth Foundation celebrated their 8th Hwarang Day at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea, CA. Recognized by the State of California on October 10th, the event brought together members from Los Angeles and Orange County to participate in a day filled with games, food, and community spirit.
The celebration kicked off with traditional Korean and popular American festival games, offering a unique cultural blend for both members and their families. Participants of all ages enjoyed activities throughout the day, which started with each chapter creating spirited chants to cheer on their teams. The group was divided into two teams, blue and red, to compete for the coveted Hwarang Day Cup.
One of the event's highlights was jegi-chagi (ì œê¸°ì°¨ê¸°), a traditional Korean game similar to hackysack, where players kick a weighted shuttlecock to keep it in the air. Both parents and children participated, with the Shilla chapter securing victory in this game, scoring 41 points for the blue team. The day continued with another traditional game, kkori-jabgi (꼬리 잡기), a fast-paced competition where players tag opponents. The San Diego chapter claimed victory, adding three points to the red team’s tally.
In addition to traditional games, participants took part in classic American events such as Tug of War, dodgeball, and a relay race. The relay race, which tested the agility and coordination of team members, turned out to be one of the day's most exciting moments. In a thrilling finish, the Eastland chapter narrowly defeated the Shilla chapter, adding 15 points to the blue team’s score.
Parents also had the opportunity to participate in their own relay race, showcasing their enthusiasm and competitive spirit. With two mothers and one father representing each chapter, the Shilla chapter’s parents claimed victory in this high-energy race.
The final event of the day, 박터트리기 (Breaking the Pot), provided a lighthearted and fun conclusion to the festivities. Members hurled bean bags to break open a pot filled with treats, with cheers erupting as both teams secured 10 points each.
After a full day of competitions, the blue team emerged victorious, earning the most points and demonstrating the dedication and spirit of the Hwarang Youth Foundation. The day concluded with a highly anticipated raffle, where attendees walked away with prizes ranging from makeup and gift cards to a mini vacuum, Sony headphones, an iPad, and even a MacBook, sparking excitement among the crowd.
Hwarang Day once again highlighted the foundation’s commitment to fostering community and celebrating Korean culture. The event brought together families and members, reinforcing bonds within the organization and leaving participants looking forward to future celebrations.
