The San Francisco & Bay Area Korea Center has launched an educational program for seniors.
On Sunday, October 13th, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, students from the Northern California Youth Volunteer Foundation’s Hwarang chapter held various programs at the San Francisco & Bay Area Korean American Association building. The event, in collaboration with the San Francisco Korean American Senior Association (President Lee Kyung-hee), aimed to assist local seniors by offering practical programs, demonstrating community engagement through volunteer service.
The Hwarang program was organized by five committees—Medical, IT, Global Links, Art, and Media. First, the Medical Committee led seniors in beneficial stretching exercises for the neck, shoulders, and back, promoting physical health. The IT Committee provided guidance on using smartphones, social media, and internet tools, helping seniors familiarize themselves with modern technology.
In addition, the Global Links Committee focused on teaching common English expressions frequently used in everyday places like hospitals, banks, and markets. The Art Committee conducted a seasonal activity, creating "thankful pumpkins," which allowed participants to reflect on the meaning of gratitude.
Lastly, the Media Committee captured photos and videos of the day’s activities and conducted interviews with participants, preserving a record of the event.
Through this program, more than 50 members of the San Francisco & Bay Area Korean American Association and the Korean American Senior Association, along with over 30 Hwarang Youth Foundation members, shared a meaningful and rewarding time, fostering a sense of unity among Korean Americans across generations.
Lee Kyung-hee, president of the San Francisco Korean American Senior Association, expressed her gratitude, saying, “Despite the over 60-year age gap, the Hwarang youth delivered a vibrant and practical program, and I am thankful to them and to President Kim Han-il for organizing this event.”
During the event, congratulations poured in for President Kim Han-il, who recently won the grand prize at the 2024 World Korean Community Leaders Convention for his presentation on the renovation of the Korean Center, recognized as an exemplary case of Korean association management. Former Korean American Federation President Lee Jung-soon and Justin Kim from the Hwarang Youth Foundation delivered congratulatory speeches and presented flowers to President Kim.
Lee Jung-soon praised Kim’s achievement, noting that winning the grand prize for exemplary management practices at a conference with over 350 Korean community leaders worldwide was a proud moment in the history of the San Francisco & Bay Area Korean Association. She thanked him for his dedication and congratulated him on the award.
In response, President Kim expressed his gratitude to Lee for attending the event and to the Hwarang youth for their participation.
The next sessions of the program will be held on Sunday, November 17th, and Sunday, December 8th, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at the San Francisco & Bay Area Korea Center.
